Our History

100.9 Port Stephens FM's first test transmission was broadcast across the airwaves on the 1st of April, 1993 from the peak of Wanda Head, Salamander Bay; transmitting 30 Watts on the 95.3FM frequency from our mobile studio – the caravan!

By the end of the year, we were transmitting 200 watts from a studio in Stockton Street, Nelson Bay with a signal-boost from the main transmitter at Gan Gan Hill Lookout. Our 90 day broadcast licence allowed us to operate for seven days each month.

In February 1998 we were granted a 5-month 24-hour licence and since July 1998 we have operated on a full-time licence. During those first years, PSFM’s service to the community included: local employment services, interviews with State and Federal Members of Parliament, Port Stephens Council news, emergency service announcements, Street Beat interviews with the local chief inspector and local weather reports from Coastal Patrol (now Marine Rescue).

During 1999, PSFM was able to secure a new directional aerial on our tower, allowing even greater transmitting strength to the west. July 2000, saw the relocation of our studios from Nelson Bay to the Tomaree Community Centre in Salamander Bay where we operate today.

It is with great thanks to our Foundation President Benni Lind and the hard work of all the founding committee and subsequent members of PSFM that we are the great station that you hear today.
